Auburn’s women’s golf team in in fourth place going into Sunday’s final round of the Auburn Derby Invitational.

The Tigers shot a 16-over 304 on Sunday to fall from third place to fourth, 18 shots behind first-place Arizona, at the Auburn University Club.

"I thought we played really well today, but we definitely have some ground to make up on Sunday," Auburn coach Kim Evans said.

"This tournament is a great test for us. We have a great field to compete with, and we are seeing just how tough they are.”

Junior Candace Schepperle was  in fourth place individually after Satuday’s round after shooting a 1-over 73 to go with her opening-round 71.  Sophomore Sarah Thread was in 11th place with a 5-over 149.

Frierson leads Tigers to win

High-scoring freshman Katy Frierson enhanced scored her ninth goal of the season and it was all Auburn needed to beat Georgia 1-0 on Thursday night. The Tigers (9-7-2, 5-3-1), a game and a half behind first-place LSU in the West with two games remaining, turn their attention to Sunday’s home game against Tennessee.

"We had a great effort by all the girls,” Auburn coach Karen Hoppa said. “Our defense was outstanding.” We were playing against the best attacking player in the league last year in Carrie Patterson, and we did a great job of shutting her down. The few times she did get past our defense (Allison) Whitworth was steady as a rock,"

Georgia saw a four-game winning streak ended in fell to 7-9-1 and 5-3-1.

Tigers struggle, lose ground in tournament

Auburn lost nine strokes on the back nine Saturday and fell into 12th place goint into Sunday’s final round n the Bank of Tennessee Classic in Johnson City, Tenn. The Tigers shot 299 for the day and are at 594 for the tournament.

"I think tomorrow we'll get paired on the back side and get off it early," said Auburn coach Mike Griffin said. "We really didn't do well on the birdie holes. We just can't get on top of them. We've played the tough holes better.

"For the most part, except for a triple (bogey) on 17, we've played the tough holes on the back well. We're just not giving ourselves the cushion we need."

Wake Forest leads the tournament at 576, followed by East Tennessee State.
