HUNTSVILLE – DeWanna Bonner scored 25 points, had eight rebounds and six steals to lead Auburn's women's basketeball team to a 91-53 season-opening victory at Alabama A&M on Friday.
Five players scored in double figures as Auburn took control early and were never threatened.
The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field and forced 37 Bulldog turnovers. They had a 50-31 rebounding edge.
“It is always nice to get a win, and that is the most important thing,” Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. “It may not have been as pretty as I would have liked it to have been, but it is early and it is our first regular-season game.”
Fortner was particularly bothered by 24 Auburn turnovers to 21 assists.
“Our biggest concern was the turnovers,” Fortner said. “To have more turnovers that assists, that is just something that we cannot be doing. We have to work hard to make sure that does not happen
again.”
Keke Carrier had 11 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots for Auburn. Senior Trevesha Jackson and Huntsville natives Sherell and Reneisha Hobbs had 10 points apeiece.
Finishing behind Bonner in scoring was junior KeKe Carrier with 11
The Tigers return to the court Monday when they play Temple at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
