Pelham's Alvin Hines II remains one of Auburn's top DB targets
  • Defensive end McAllister to FSU
  • No Gator offer for Scott

Defensive back Roderick Sweeting left the Auburn campus after a July 11 visit with the feeling that he was close to deciding he wanted to play for the Tigers.

But that apparently isn’t going to happen. An early commitment might have secured the highly regarded Sweeting a spot, but time and space ran out.

“I loved the campus,” Sweeting, from Luella High School in Locust Fork, Ga., told AuburnUndercover.com. “I was leaning toward them, but they said they were full. I didn’t think it was going to happen like that. It kind of made me mad. I was telling them that’s where I wanted to go, but they called my coach and said they were full.”

Sweeting has visited Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Auburn this summer. He said Georgia, Alabama and Georgia Tech are now at the top of his wish list.

As a junior, Sweeting, 6-0 and 170 pounds. scored seven touchdowns on offense and returned a kick for a touchdown. On defense, he was in on 58 tackles and intercepted one pass.

Reggie Taylor of Fort Valley, Ga., is the Tigers’ only public defensive back commitment, but they have attracted serious interest from, among others, David Conner of South Panola in Batesville, Miss; Alvin Hines II of Pelham; Zeke Motta of Vero Bach, Fla.; and Darren Myles and Branden Smith of Atlanta.

Scott gives Florida a look

Running back Rodney Scott, who committed to Auburn in May but has since said he is looking elsewhere, participated in Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp last Friday. Scott, from Dixie County High School  in Cross City, Fla., told The Gainesville Sun he had hoped to get an offer but had not had a chance to talk with Florida coaches.

That probably doesn’t bode well for Scott getting an opportunity to play for the Gators.

Big prize for Florida State

Defensive end Demonte McAllister, an Under Armour All-American, has committed to Florida State, according to ESPN.com’s Craig Haubert.

Auburn was among numerous schools who offered scholarships to McAllister, from Alonso High School in Tampa. He also had offers from Georgia, LSU, Florida, Miami, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and Clemson.
