Marc Burns added another Olympic medal to Auburn’s total Friday. Burns, running for Trinidad and Tobago, ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay, helping his team to a silver medal with a time of 38.06. Jamaica won the gold medal with a world-record time of 37.10.

Burns’ medal gives former Tigers four medals in track and field events in the Beijing Games and 17 overall. Kerron Stewart won silver in the women’s 100 meters and bronze in the 200 meters. Leevan Sands won bronze in the triple jump. Current and former Auburn swimmers won 13 medals.

Stewart missed out on a chance at a third medal when the favoed Jamaicans were disqualified in the 4x100 relay Friday because of a faulty exchange.

Two former Tigers will compete in the men’s 4x400 relay final Saturday. Avard Moncur ran the second leg for the Bahamas in Friday’s prelminiaries. His team finished second overall. Sanjay Ayre ran the third leg for Jamaica, which finished fourth overall.

Former Tiger Maurice Smith of Jamaica finished ninth in the decathlon with 8,205 points. Smith, who started the second day in 10th place, got off to a strong start, posting the fourth-best time in the 110m hurdles (14.08) followed by the second-best mark in the discus (50.91m), which moved him up to fifth place.

Smith was still fifth after the pole vault (4.60m), but a 22nd-place showing in the javelin (51.52m) dropped him to 12th place. He moved up to ninth with a seventh-place finish in the final event - the 1500m, posting a season-best time of 4:31.62.
