Friday was a big day for Little Rock Christian running back Michael Dyer and a big day for first-year Auburn head coach Gene Chizik and his staff.
Dyer did what he had long planned to do and committed to Auburn. And Chizik and his men sent a message loudly and clearly that they are back in the game when it comes to going after the top players in the nation.
Dyer, rated the nation's top running back prospect and No. 7 prospect overall by ESPN/Scouts Inc., could have gone anywhere he chose. And he chose Auburn.
The Tigers also have a commitment from the No. 24 overall prospect in wide receiver Antonio Goodwin. They are in there pitching for running back Marcus Lattimore, the No. 16 prospect; running back Lache Sestrunk, the No. 29 prospect; wide receiver Trovon Reed, the No. 45 prospect and several others.
Chizik vowed when he arrived last December that Auburn would be a player in recruiting the best players available. And he's been true to his word.
Perceptions sometimes die hard, and it might take a while for the college football world to sit up and take notice of what's happening. But that doesn't really matter.
What matters is that it is happening.
