If there was any doubt before, Auburn's 2010 recruiting class became a romping, stomping success Monday.
At Warner Robins High School, four-star defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker declared he would sign with the Tigers on Wednesday. To say he was a prime target would be an understatement.
Like every class, this one could have been better. No school gets every player it wants. But it's not over yet.
It looks now like running back Marcus Lattimore is likely to go to South Carolina, but coaches are waiting for word from defensive end Corey Lemonier and defensive tackle Byran Jones.
Obviously, adding more big-time prospects would make the class better. But with them or without them, this class has more potential impact players than any I can remember at Auburn. And it has more than most in the nation.
As the class stands now, Auburn is easily in the top five nationally. It is No. 5 according to ESPN/Scouts Inc., and those rankings were last updated on Jan. 20. They do not include the additions of Whitaker and offensive lineman Eric Mack.
According to at least one service, Auburn has passed Alabama and is No. 3 nationally.
The No. 1 prospect in Louisiana is headed for Auburn. The No. 1 prospect in Arkansas is headed for Auburn. The No. 1 prospect in Mississippi is headed for Auburn. Two Georgians chose Auburn over the homestate Bulldogs. One player abandoned an Alabama commitment in favor of Auburn. Others turned down Alabama overtures and chose Auburn.
Yes, regardless of what happens with those left on the board, it's been quite a year for Gene Chizik and his men.
